damn it is dark up in dat biaatch. and my threads haven't smelt like ashtray this bad in a long while. The DJ is all the way in the back of the stage where they do live performances, kinda killing that DJ/crowd interaction. So much for the negative things about club 'Bed'. Well, it's called 'Bed'. Fuck a name tho.

It's about hiphop. Real fuckin' hiphop. DJs that mix dope beats in a proper manner. From Slum Village/Dilla joints to Das Efx. Alkaholiks. Biggie. Biggie. Big L. Show and AG. Biggie. My kinda thing. It's not some clean lookin' Roppongi style joint with that Vegas bottle service vibe. They deal with the real, and shut down the fakers.

I went there with ma girl Yoshiko AKA Yoppi-chan AKA Gori-chan. We had some gin tonics. I was the only western guy up in there, so random people start talking to you, peeps are really friendly in Japanland. So yeah, I found my club of choice; four outta five stars!

So I am moving into my permanent place soon, where I can finally start DJ-ing again. I went cold turkey coming over here, from a couple of hours a day to none.

Since my set-up back in Holland is 220 volts and Japanland is 100 volts, I couldn't use my mixer over here. So I've been on the look-out for a good second-hand one for a while. No love, so I was already preparing to settle for a new one, setting me back at least 90.000 yen.

I hadn't considered gettin the same mixer I got back in Holland tho, since it's been outta production for a while, but it's an awesome machine. Yesterday I googled 中古DJM-707 (second hand), and one popped up at the DJ store in Shibuya where I go to a lot, and hang out with the staff a little. So yeah, 29.800 yen, that's about 220 euros off the top of my head. Excellent!!!! And of course, Japanese people take care of their stuff really well, so the thing looks and feel like new! I am so stoked.

I met Keiji last year, and he was kind enough to let me store some of my stuff at his place when I went back to Holland.

I hooked up with him again, he recently bought a big-ass Toyota truck, and he invited me to hang out and drive around a little bit to the outside of Tokyo, and do some fishing; one of his biggest hobbies. It was good to get out of the city for a day, Tokyo can get a little claustrophobic for a small-town-white-boy like myself.

Is the area where I will be living for the next 2 months. Nice n quite area in the Nakano district, but still only 30 minutes away from the downtown craziness. There's lotsa small restaurants (way cheaper than the ones downtown), a big supermarket and a decent 100 yen shop, where you can get all the daily essentials (any broke-ass cracka's favorite shop).

Zondagavond 15 november: Na concerten in Stockholm en London, kwamen Pete Rock & CL Smooth in Sneek, Friesland. Enige concert in NL yall! Er loopt niet eens een snelweg langs Sneek. Je rijdt dan ook oa. door Dearsum, home of Ids Postma.

DJ Sniper was speciaal weer ff teruggekomen uit de Bay Area om tussen de bedrijven door de boel aan elkaar te spinnen. dope. Maar toch, wat was die sound toch weer slecht. De sound engineers van Nederland zijn de slechtste hiphop mixers van de planeet.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth were havin' fun. CL was een hungry mofo, en Pete Rock hella vrolijk en ook nog 'ns echt aan het DJ-en, ergo, real hiphop. Hoogtepunt: Pete's air saxophone during TROY. Die MJ tribute van 2 nummers hoefde van mij niet zo, maar CL had zin in een bakje thee. Ik was de hele show verder in head nod mode. Dat Pete Rock zn stem kwijt was boeide me niet zoveel.

I just got back from my man Keiji's b-day party in some Tokyo suburb named Saitama, so going home wasn't really an option since the trains stop running at around midnight. I crashed on his couch, and hopped on an early train when I first woke up at around six.

Six o'clock on Saturday morning, and the train was crowded as fuck. I don't get it, where do all these people need to be that early. All kinds of people I might add, not just construction workers or some shit. Salariman (suit-n-tie corporate slaves), kids in school uniforms, senior citizens, punkrocker lookin dudes and girls in full dress n make-up.

Where the fuck do you people need to be on a a saturday morning?! It's weekend!! You gotta come in at the office at 7? Nobody looked in a particular good mood either....
I get it when the old-school goes off and does his thing, but what is up with these youngsters. Nothing punk rock about it. Break free yall!

I myself gonna catch a couple more hours of zzzzzz now. oh yeah and an Advil or 2..the brews were tasting mighty healthy a couple of hours ago, but I know how that is gonna turn out. peace yall.

Yesterday I went skating at this park in the Musashino district. It took me a while to find the park from station, since this guy who I asked where it was send me completely the wrong way.

After an hour I found the park, it was located in this huge sports center, with a pool, track n field course, football pitches...and of course, the 'street sports' spot.
I had to wear a helmet tho, which I HATE, but it was a pretty cool course. I met up with Jani, from the Almost Famous store and his buddies. Man, Jani fuckin ripped! Super consistent, nollie tre flips in the bank, killed the rail on the pyramid with back lips, smith grinds etc.

I hadn't skated for like 3, 4 months, so I was a little rusty, but I had a brand new Light board set up, and after a while I started feeling it again, dropping my basic arsenal of tricks, like tre flips in the bank, kickflips over the hip and backside boardslides and nose and 5-0 grinds. I had a really good time fo sho!

There's this bar a five-minute walk from my house, where they play reggae, from roots to bangin' dancehall, but basically they are down with 'black music' that is straight from the heart.

I discovered this little gem last week, and that Saturday night I went for the first time. I didn't have my camera with me, so it felt too bland to write about it, but the party was poppin'! I met a lot of new people that night, including Ati, a Spanish guy that works for a Japanese tea company. Everybody was supernice, including the owner, Gin-san, who went to Jamaica 7 times because of his love for reggae. He had great stories about his travels.

Last night I strolled down there again. It wasn't as hype as last week, but I was basically hangin' out with the locals, the vibe is real mellow, I like that a lot. I passed Gin-san a mix-cd of mine, because I would love to get my DJ on there sometimes. My main thing is hiphop, but I got tons of reggae as well, so I think he'll hook me up with a gig soon.

He introduced me to Hibi AKA Hibikilla, a reggae artist. We had really nice conversation, about Japanese and Western culture, our mutual feelings about globalization...all kinds of stuff.

He told me he went on a honeymoon with the Mrs. to L.A. and Jamaica in 2007. He hooked up with a guy in L.A. from Japanese descent and did a collabo track with, and we talked about how Japanese people in the US were treated after WOII. I already knew what was up with that, which he appreciated a lot, but a lot of people have no idea, since it's not really covered in school. Man, that stuff is bad news. Racism towards Japanese people was really really bad, people were convicted of basically being Japanese, and there were CONCENTRATION CAMPS (!!!!) in the US where they were thrown into to rot. That track I mentioned earlier is about that forgotten part in history, it's called 'Go for Broke':

Then they went to Jamaica, and my man lost his wallet at LAX!! So they basically had no money over there. They were worried at first, but the fact that they were broke over there made it an awesome experience, gettin to feel the genuine warmth and hospitality from the locals, that helped him out with everything. Of course, his love for reggae music opened a lot doors. When they got back to LAX, to go home to Japan, it turned out his wallet was found and dropped at the lost&found. Jah Bless!!

Another thing we talked about was ganja in Japan, and how strict the laws are. Hibi had a buddy that went to jail for 2 years for carrying 10 grams of weed, with no intent to distribute. I knew it was strict over here, but not that strict!! Hibi told me that he could have had his sentence reduced if he apologized in court, but he didn't. He said he felt he had done nothing wrong and rather serve the full bid than to apologize. Some serious 'no loss of face' ish right there. Another thing people don't realize is that the strict regulation is a heritage from the US occupation after WOII. The use of hemp (大麻, meaning the great hemp plant), smoking it during Buddhist rituals but also using it to manufacture clothing etc., has been an important part of Japanese culture in the olden days.

so yeah, I had a really great time last night, with some wholesome conversations, which I don't really get to have a lot in Japan. Hibi also hooked me up with his demo CD, which includes instrumentals and acapellas, so I'll get my reeeeemix on!

Reason for that is that the main thing why I am in Japan is developing my own business and exploring the market over here. Things are going really well in that department, so please forgive me for not posting anything up on a more frequent basis. I could do all these 'philosophical' rants about how I feel about certain stuff, but who the fuck cares anyway. I know I don't. That's not what this blog is about.

While I'm at it, today I was in the city for some business, and on the prowl for some new sneakers. I brought one pair of Nikes, that I've been using for my daily running routine as well, making them look kinda busted already. It was hard coppin' a size 12 over here, but I did it!

Then I stumbled up on this piece by Neckface, the 'incognito' artist with real macabre artwork. I love his style and this is the first time ever that I saw a piece of his in real life.

since my last post. I got a lotta stuff goin on here, and I've been slackin' off on the blog. My boy El Pres said I should have more respect for my readers, haha.

Well, last Thursday was pretty epic, when I went to the Percee P show, which was in at a real dope venue called Heavy Sick Zero. It consisted of 2 rooms, the main one and the basement. Both rooms had real dope DJs spinning, and this turntable group called Groundwork Djs really caught my attention. I made some vids with my camera, but the sound is completely garbage, I guess it can't handle club systems that well. The basement had some DJs spinnin instrumentals, and anybody who wanted to have a go could spit something. I was pretty impressed by most them actually. One guy was working this Pioneer FX box with the instrumentals, sounded real dope! The vibe of the whole night was something I hadn't felt in a long time. Good times, everybody was in a real good mood, gettin their party on, instead of tryin to look hard on the sideline. Hiphop just basically felt alive!

Then I went to the bathroom for a quick pitstop, but some dude was blocking the way, sayin' to me:'hold up fam, we busy in there'. I laughed a lil bit and just waited, then he asked me if I smoked. I was like:'cigarettes?' and he said:'naah man, trees'.
When I told him I was from The Netherlands he invited me to join them to have a lil puff off their pipe. I was pretty stoked and afterwards feelin the music even more! We hung out a lil bit more that night and found out they were skateboarders, just like me. I've been dyin' to get my sesh on over here, and as soon as I got some time I'll be rollinnnnn! The Percee P show was real nice too, eventho I thought it was a shame the promoter was pressin' play on the beats, and he messed up a couple of times. I really love it when there is interaction between an MC and a DJ, too bad but oh well, can't win 'em all. The room was absolutely packed to the max, but since my 6'2" is a lil bit above average over here I got a good view of the show.

Alrightyyyy, time for another post!

I went to Shibuya again, cuz I heard its got some great record stores, and damn that's an understatement!

First I went to this little joint (forgot the name...), and I was really really impressed with what they were carryin'. Especially the hiphop selection was real dope:

Next up I went to RecoFan....damn this has to be the biggest recordstore I've ever been to. Massive collection of all genres, and even tho I hardly mess with vinyl anymore, I felt the money burning in my pockets. I did get some second-hand CDs, which I can rip easily for my Serato Scratch Life thingy. 9th Wonder's Dream Merchant 2, for 1100 yen, thats like 8 euros haha. And the 'Life and Dept' soundtrack, a movie about Jamaica's financial problems for 700 yen. Cheapo Cheapo! Then I went to Manhattan Records, really dope and clean lookin' store with all the latest club bangers on 12". I got 2 CDs tho, Ghostdeini the Great and 88 Keys - Death of Adam (I downloaded it before, but I don't really roll like that as a DJ....support the artists!!!)

Then 2 Japanese dudes walked in with somebody I've seen before, the man the myth, the legend Percee P! He was doin a couple of shows in Japan, and since I know his boy Creature from NYC really well (I DJ-ed on his Dutch tour last year) that broke the ice quite nicely. I'm stoked people are still feelin that real NYC hiphop and he's still able to tour the world! In true Percee P style, he sold me a CD. We exchanged math in case he needs some help around Japan. Imma cop his show this Thursday...hyped! Of course we took a pic. I know, I'm tryin to look real hard, throwin up the Scissor Gang Mafia sign!

Scratch sessions @ Vestax Headquarters

My man DJ KEN-ONE, who I met on Myspace to try and help him with gigs in Euroland, invited me to come and join the 1st Scratch Session on January 6th at PACO, which is at Vestax Headquarters in Tokyo.

Man, it was sooo fun. I'm not that nice on the cuts, but sessioning with these guys, 5 different set-ups hooked-up at the same time, it was my funnest day here so far. These dudes got skills! That session room had the complete Vestax history there displayed on a wall. I copped a nice set of blue Serato control vinyl as well! Afterwards, we went for some grub at Denny's! I gotta tell ya, Denny's over here is nothing like in the US, where I would only go after a night of heavy drinking.

They videod the whole thing, and I found this one on Youtube, I'm not in this one, but that don't really matter.

Then we went to Power DJs, a store in Shibuya, where KEN-ONE used to work. Really dope store! I met this dude DJ Shu-G, who invited me to come party this Saturday.

Today I got the keys to my appartment, which is located in the Minami-Asagaya district, about 20 minutes from Shinjuku, a well-known district.

It's big enough, and it's in a really quiet neighborhood, which I like. Free superfast internet, and a washing machine. I'm all set!
I'm pretty stoked I've been able to get my own place within 5 days.

I'm going into my 3rd day here, and I am almost over my jetlag, even tho getting up at 8 in the morning isn't something I would normally do when I don't have any place to be that 'early'. I'm a night person.

Still lovin it here. I deliberately chose to stay in a hotel the first week, I am kind of a loner and this is the best way for me to get used to my new surroundings.
I'm gonna check out the town a little bit today, Shinjuku and Akihabara, imma try and get a cellphone.

I made it to Japan! I landed on Narita Airport at around 10 AM local time, and I went to this hotel near the airport to catch up on some sleep. As usual, I didn't get any sleep on the plane, which can be pretty frustrating sometimes. Oh well, luxury problems, and I got to see Tropical Thunder and new Indiana Jones on the plane. The last one really sucked monkey balls, like my boys from Southpark would say:'They raped Indy!!'. As soon as I got to the hotel, I took a shower and went out for something to eat, I was starved. I got a nice bowl of yaki soba; noodles, veggies and some meat in a big bowl of soup. I know catering-wise I am gonna be cool in Japan. The food over here is awesome! After that I hit the sack (no homo) and got in a good 6 hours.

It turned out that there was a huge temple near my hotel, called Narita zan, where people go to celebrate the new year, pay their respects to the ancestors and wish for prosperity for the new year. It was crowded as hell, friggin cold outside and I was pretty out of it due to the jetlag, but it was a cool experience. It's considered rude to take pictures within the premises of the temple, so I skipped that, but check out the pics of line and the temple from outside:

Packing up

I moved out of my house in Rotterdam, and I am chilling at my parents' place during the holidays. It's a pretty nice vibe and I am enjoying mommie's homecooking.

The other day I booked my ticket to Tokyo, and Finnair is taking me there on December 30. Damn, that's in 5 days!

So right now I am packing my stuff. It's hard moving to a different country with only a big suitcase for my clothes (about 3 weeks worth plus 2 suits) a record case for stuff like audio-cables and other random stuff. I got a big bag for carry-on luggage; I'm using that one for my DJ mixer and my laptop. I am gonna try and pursue some kinda DJ career over there, and going digital (with Serato Scratch Live and control vinyl) enables me to do that. I wouldn't even be able to bring 5 percent of my records, but now I got about 110 gigabytes of music with me!

I booked a nice hotel for my first week in Tokyo, and I am actually gonna spend new year's eve over there. I have no idea what that night is going to bring me, but I am really hyped.
I'm gonna get used to my new environment a little bit (it's been almost 10 years the last time I was in Japan) in the first week, and hook up with my friends. After that I am going to be on my quest for an appartment!

The blog is pretty bland now, but yo, I haven't even left yet! As soon as I am there I'll start using my camera.

What's up yall!?

As some of you might know, I did Japanese language and culture in college, leaving me with a Masters degree. And after I started working full time for a Japanese company, I realized that the corporate life wasn't for me. Somehow I am feeling The Netherlands is cramping my style....and career opportunities. So I decided to go to Japan and live there for a while. I am gonna try and implement some business 'schemes' I have in mind. I also wanna try and DJ at clubs and venues in Tokyo, and I am real confident that's gonna work.
